It offers a range of traditional and consumer-directed health insurance products and related services, including medical, pharmacy, dental, behavioral health, group life, and disability plans, and medical management capabilities and healthcare management services. Aetna's current mail order pharmacy, an Oracle E-Business system, is highly dependent upon manual data entry and direct user actions to process orders. The associated imaging/faxing systems add work and complexity to the ordering process and do not take advantage of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) capabilities to reduce manual data entry. Because of these issues, Aetna's average cost per prescription fill is well above industry norms.

Summit Technologies was contracted to provide assistance in working with a third party imaging vendor to design a new integrated prescription ordering system. The new system has been designed to reduce required data entry functions by utilizing OCR capabilities, use established business logic and validations through web-services API’s and implement a fax server system replacement. The scope of work includes requirements gathering, system design modeling, forms design, unit testing and integration testing.

With the help of Summit, Aetna is successfully meeting its deliverables.
