Executives and managers at United Technologies wanted a portal
capability at their corporate headquarters. They desired a
knowledge management tool that would enhance communication, promote
collaboration, and make their employees more productive. These goals
would be achieved through easier access to corporate information and
applications, and automated business processes; in essence, a
paperless office. United Technologies did not have the specialized
skills required for developing such a portal readily available.
United Technologies called upon Summit Technologies, in conjunction with
HP (Compaq), for the specialized expertise necessary to implement
the portal. The project had grown in complexity and magnitude to include
other UTC business units and divisions, and to account for future global
expansion. Requirements expanded to include remote access, multiple
device access, single sign-on, multiple languages, 24/7 operation, and
integration with existing systems. Summit responded to these challenges
by implementing Plumtree, a state-of-the-art portal that could be
accessed by employees, world-wide, at any time.
The implementation was a success and enabled employees in those UTC
divisions accessing the Plumtree portal to work more efficiently and
productively. It also invited worker collaboration and made employee
work and life issues easier to address.
